Getting back into the groove after a long holiday weekend is tough after all the yummy food, lack of sleep, too many adult beverages and too little green juice and exercise. Let’s not forget all the guilt to top it all off. If you’re looking for a way to stimulate your body and get yourself back on track then I highly recommend dry brushing.
My latest favorite trend is dry brushing. For those of you who don’t know, one third of your body’s toxins are excreted through the skin and dry brushing helps to unclog pores and excrete toxins that become trapped in the skin. These days I am starting each morning with a dry brush and a glass of warm water with Bragg’s Apple cider Vinegar before I do anything.
How to Dry Brush
Dry brushing can be done each day, best in the morning before getting into the shower. Start with a gentle brush and soft pressure, working up to a firmer brush and more firm pressure once you get used to the sensation. Starting at the your feet, brush the bottoms of my feet and up your legs in smooth, long strokes. I usually brush each section of skin 5-10 times. For lymph flow, I brush toward the heart/chest area where the lymph system drains. As a golden rule of thumb, brush toward the center of the body. Repeating the same process with the arms, starting with the palms of the hands and brushing up the arm towards your heart. On the stomach and armpits, brush in a circular clockwise motion. You can get a softer brush for your face.
Why It’s Important
The lymphatic system is a major factor in the body’s immune system. It’s made up of organs, lymph nodes, ducts, and vessels that transport lymph throughout our body. These lymph vessels run just below the skin. My guru granola mentors tell me that dry brushing the skin regularly helps stimulate the normal lymph flow within our body and help the body detoxify itself naturally. Exfoliation is the process of running a firm, natural bristled brush over the skin to help loosen and remove dead skin cells. Exfoliating the skin can also help with clearing oil, residue, and dirt from the pores.
Bye Bye Cellulite
I’ve heard from many people who swear that regular dry brushing greatly helped their cellulite. There isn’t much scientific research to back the cellulite claims, but I do know that dry brushing feels amazing and makes skin softer so there isn’t really any downside to trying it. I think that dry brushing gives me a natural energy boost. After dry brushing, my body feels as though it has had a pre-workout before I start my day or go to do my regular exercise regimen. This is the reason that I don’t recommend dry brushing at night before bed because it will definitely keep you awake. One theory is that because it increases circulation, which also increases energy.
