Spring is here! The air is fragrant and newness is all around you pretty girl. What can we do to feel energized with our surroundings? One of my favorites is cleaning out my closet, getting rid of anything I haven’t worn all year. We all have that emotional side of our closet that is taking up space, energy and could be donated or sold to a consignment store. Don’t make it huge 5-hour ordeal, just pick 5 things to start and maybe do it again in a week. Tell yourself you can replace them with something fresh and new which will help the transition be a little smoother.
Now while we’re on the subject of starting anew, we need to address your makeup bag. Owning a makeup bags means being badgered with questions like “Why is there so much stuff in there?” or my personal favorite, “Why isn’t there more things in it?”. Some things to think about when dealing with your makeup bag are:
- What exactly is in there?
- How long has it been there?
Think about all the temperatures this makeup bag has endured in and out of your purse. Think about how long these products have sat there day in and day out. Here is a list of things you should replace:
Eyeliner – Eyeliner is great to add a touch of drama around your eyes, but it can also be used to fill in your brows. Filled in brows make such a positively elegant statement. Historically every great beauty has her brows filled in. Think Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe.
Eyeshadow – A travel size version of some basic neutrals is always great to have. Creamy white, sandy brown, black, grey, plumb. Shadows are also great to use as liners in a pinch.
Mascara– Did you know that mascara should be used for only 3 months before you toss it and get another? Using a $50.00 mascara that is 4 years old, has been sitting in your handbag in the heat and cold, defeats the purpose. All, or hopefully all women know, that not all mascaras are the same. The best mascara’s volume, curl, lengthen, don’t flake, and very importantly don’t smudge underneath your lashes. Pumping the mascara wand in and out is not getting more on the wand, it’s only adding air bubbles that ultimately dry out the mascara.
Blush & Bronzer – These definitely need to be replaced so that they can give you the glow you need.
Concealer- A touch under the eyes with a dab of moisturizer will lighten and brighten no matter what your busy schedule is.
Foundation – You never know when you need to do major damage control on your skin. A last-minute dinner invitation?!
Powder – A translucent pressed powder swept over your face after you have gotten the oils off your skin with a blotting paper is a must. In need of blotting paper? Use a toilet seat cover. Ok, Girley… Get your nose out to the air, we sometimes need to be resourceful!
Makeup Brushes – If you have makeup brushes in your bag, please do yourself a favor and clean them! You will avoid eye infections, the shadows, bronzer and blush will look a million times better if there are not mixed with colors, dirt, crumbs and germs.
Makeup Bag – If your makeup bag is worn and torn, then it needs to go. Keeping all of your lovely products in a dirty and dingy makeup bag isn’t doing you any favors.
These are the essentials that every makeup bag has, but I also want to share with you some products you might not have thought to put in that can be very helpful:
Hand cream- I keep a lavender hand cream in my bag always for whenever my hands get dry and rough. The lavender oil is fantastic to calm and relax your nerves when you are out in the busy world.
Q-tips – These are absolute lifesavers in any makeup disaster.
Band-Aids – How many times have you wished you had one in your bag after asking a kind stranger for one and swearing on your life you will put some in your bag the second you get home? Well, now is the time to do it!
Hand Sanitizer & Wet Wipes – Kids and husbands are always asking for these so just do yourself a favor and keep them in stock.
Perfume – A small sample of a glam perfume is better to have in your makeup bag then sitting in your drawer at home. You never know when you’re going to need a spritz of fabulous.
Raw almonds – My personal recommendation for never having to starve again. They’re the perfect light snack to keep you from getting hangry.
