My Favorite Thing About Being a Makeup Artist (MAU)

FullSizeRenderOne thing is for sure, my favorite thing about being a MUA is that no day is ever the same. I had a shoot at The St. Francis Soda Fountain in San Francisco, a location that dates back to 1918. We were shooting a video piece for a Guinness Beer milkshake that consisted of beer and vanilla ice-cream.

The model was a woman who worked as a voiceover artist, but not normally in front of the camera. It is always more tricky to work with a “normal” person rather then a professional model, because they might be made up to look in a way that they are not used to. My job is to make them look best for the camera. At times, I end up being a therapist or mommy trying to coax them into doing what needs to be done while still feeling comfortable in their own skin.

I make them look their best, and in a way that is best suited for the particular shoot. Importantly, they must also feel their best so they appear comfortable in front of the camera. It’s the inside outside effect. If you don’t feel good on the inside, it will effect how the images come across on the screen! After all is said and done, we got the footage we needed and the model looked fantastic and then went back to the way she felt most comfortable, like herself..
